Monday I was at the City Council meeting in Orlando, in an attempt to talk some sense into city officials regarding their plan to spend well over $100,000 dollars of taxpayer money to remove a veterans memorial at Lake Eola Park. The plan is to move it out of sight, to a back corner of a cemetery in the Orlando area.  Last night in New Orleans, they removed the statue of Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard. It was the third of four initial monument removals, with calls for more removals shouted by violent leftist protesters in the streets of NOLA.

My town of Starke made national news over a monument fight a few years ago. We have a “free speech zone” in front of our courthouse, and a private group erected a ten commandments monument there. Like the Lake Eola monument, it was paid for with private funding. A group of atheists sued in a attempt to force the removal. The judge wisely decided that it was inappropriate for tax dollars to be used for such an endeavor, especially considering that all were welcome to erect their own monuments, and thus, it was not a case of establishment of religion. Rather than tear down one group’s monument with tax dollars, the atheists erected their own monument with private donations, in what was a very libertarian solution. Today the christian and atheist monuments peacefully coexist next to each other, like our christian and atheist residents.

Lake Eola Park has other veterans memorials. There is another one dedicated to those who fought and died at the Battle of the Bulge. It is a large park, and there is plenty of room for other markers. I told the City Council and Mayor Dyer about the way we resolved our controversy in Starke, at zero cost to the taxpayer. It was accomplished without offending an entire group of citizens, because a different group was offended. The Orlando monument is over a century old, and the chief agitator on the subject was David Porter, local leader of the hate group, Black Lives Matter. I was immediately suspicious of the motivation behind the whole debacle. It was very clear that the will of the people was being ignored, as the overwhelming majority who spoke were in opposition to its removal. My suspicions deepened when my camera caught an exchange between David Porter and an Orlando Policeman charged with keeping order in the meeting. There were 54 speaker cards turned in, and the meeting went well into the evening, after starting at 2pm. People were called to speak in the order in which they turned in their speaker request forms. I was early in the meeting, as we dropped ours off around 12:30 pm. David Porter did not file his in a timely fashion, but after throwing a temper tantrum, he was put at the head of the line.

While Mayor Dyer was quick to call out “30 seconds” as the other 54 speakers approached their time limit, he automatically gave Black Lives Matter an extra two minutes, which were used to equate a century old memorial to Confederate dead to a memorial for the Waffen SS. He was also allowed to ignore the requirement to give his legal name and address, leading to jeers from the crowd, already upset that BLM heckled an Orthodox Jewish man and an elderly woman, among others, with hateful comments. Porter made an ass out of himself by sleeping through the other speakers as well. There had to be more than just pandering to a constituency – even one that uses murder, rioting, and looting to protest.

This latest round of cultural genocide started in New Orleans. The website of the group “Take ‘Em Down NOLA” states :

“We the people of New Orleans demand that the Mayor and City Council take immediate action to remove all monuments, school names and street signs dedicated to White Supremacists. These structures litter our city with visual reminders of the horrid legacy of slavery that terrorized so many of this city’s ancestors. They misrepresent our community. We demand the freedom to live in a city where we are not forced to pay taxes for the maintenance of public symbols that demean us and psychologically terrorize us.”

Nobody is terrorized by granite historical markers. Andrew Jackson died 17 years before Lincoln’s criminal war to enforce political and economic tyranny on the southern states, yet his statue is also targeted. This is more reminiscent of the Armenian Genocide, where the names of streets and places were changed, and monuments and churches destroyed by the Ottoman Turks, in order to wipe out the memory of the people who once lived there. Myself and many other speakers suggested we could all build a monument in memory of forgotten chattel slaves, or historical figures who worked to abolish slavery. It could be an act of healing and build a positive atmosphere of cooperation and respect in the community. Orange County Libertarian Party Vice-Chair Pedro Geliga, descendant of slaves, joined the progeny of Confederates to offer this amicable solution. The idea was scoffed at, proving this was never about civil rights.

The easiest way to sort out a questionable motivation in politics is to follow the money. Who is funding “Take ‘Em Down Nola”? If you click on the link to sign the petition, you are informed that you will receive periodic updates from colorofchange.org. I looked up the group on Activist Facts. It is funded in large part by none other than George Soros. Since 2009, Soros’ Open Society Foundation (OSF) has given $550,000 to Color of Change and its parent organization, Citizen Engagement Laboratory (CEL). The irony here is absolutely staggering. This Globalist psychopath was interviewed on 60 Minutes, extolling the joy of participating in Nazi war crimes in his native Hungary, and now funds hate groups like BLM that equate dead conscript soldiers with the Waffen SS.
