It was less than 3 weeks until Barthel Schink’s 17th birthday when they hanged him in Cologne. He was a member of a subversive group, the Edelweiss Piraten, who harried and sabotaged the efforts of their local Gestapo. After a particularly flagrant attack on Cologne’s Gestapo headquarters, Schink was rounded up along with other suspected Piraten members and summarily executed.

Looking back at the history of our own nation, the law of this land was once that of the British Crown. This law was enforced by the agents of our monarchist sovereign. When the strictures and levies of King George became too much for our revolutionary forefathers to tolerate, they took up arms against those same agents of the crown.

Now, in this modern age, we find ourselves once again facing down the spectre of impending tyranny. No, the crimes of our government do not rise to the atrocious levels of the Third Reich. Nor are we treated as the dominion of a distant and capricious king. We are, however, in a bad state of affairs, and things seem to be getting worse. More and more our police officers are taking on the equipment, mindset and demeanor of an occupying military force. Every week there seems to be a new revelation about how our very own government and its agents are spying on us all, and yet substantial reforms are never made.

Today, the Chairman of the Libertarian Party of Michigan, Bill Gelineau, asked me to resign my elected position as the state party’s Director At-large. He said that my willingness to entertain the possibility of violence against the government and its enforcers was not consistent with the libertarian position. I politely refused, and in response he implied that disciplinary action of a public nature would have to be taken against me. I welcome it, because if this party is ever to be taken seriously as a sincere avenue for the advancement of liberty, then this discussion is one that we must have. While I abhor violence and consider it at all times a last resort, I acknowledge that its use must never be out of the question.

In conclusion, and in response to Mr. Gelineau, I offer this quote from our very own Declaration of Independence, a document who’s spirit I truly believe still lives on in the Libertarian Party:

When a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government
